Spring String Fling
at Riverside Elementary
By Bev Smith
During the month of April, the music classes at Riverside will be exploring the world of string instruments. Some of the instruments that students will be playing will be guitars, ukuleles and autoharps. We will also be learning about many kinds of banjo (tenor, five string, banjo-uke), zithers, dulcimers, hammered dulcimers, fiddles and bass. Each class will be forming their own old time string band and playing music for classmates to dance a play-party game, like the settlers who came to Michigan in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
As part of the “Spring String Fling”, any student who has a stringed instrument of any sort at home may bring it to school to show to their class during music class. If there are stringed instruments in your house that need simple repairs or replacement strings, send them to Riverside with your Riverside student. Mrs. Smith will make the repairs, or replace the strings at the cost of the supplies. If the repair is complicated, she can suggest where to take the instrument to get it repaired.
