The Michigan Merit Award Board adopted Resolution 2004-1 last August requiring students in the Class of 2006 and after to complete at least 40 hours of community service by June 30 of their graduation year in order to receive the award. The resolution asked local school districts to develop a community service policy that includes criteria for qualifying community service activities. Students in the Class of 2006 and after qualify for at least $2,500 for college if they meet or exceed state standards on Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) high school tests, complete 40 hours of community service, and meet other eligibility requirements. Approximately 49,000 students qualify for Michigan Merit Awards each year.
